WHAT ARE HEMORRHOIDS?

Hemorrhoids are dilated/swollen veins in the anus and rectum comparable to varicose veins that occur in other parts of the body. They can develop inside the rectum (internal hemorrhoids) or around the anus (external hemorrhoids). They can present with itching, pain or bleeding. In some cases, the hemorrhoids can be seen or felt outside the anus. In other cases, they can be hidden inside the rectum. Hemorrhoids are extremely common, and nearly 3 in 4 adults will have hemorrhoids at some point in their life.

“Hemorrhoids are very common in both men and women. About half of all people will have hemorrhoids by age 50.”
